Letter T and sorting

This week we have been busy, busy, busy. Unfortunately, that meant I forgot to pull out my camera for many of our activities, but I am happy to share the photos I did take!

This week we began learning the letter Tt. At this point this year, we have practiced the letters A, M, and T. We linked our letter learning to our practice with rhyming words. We have been practicing building rhyming words in the -at family this week (cat, rat, sat, bat, etc.). We also made a new emergent reader (repeating book) to put in our Daily 5 book bins. Our "I am" book includes sentences such as "I am __ years old.", "I am a Patriot." "I am ____(name)." Every day when students read to themselves as part of Daily 5, they now have the Brown Bear book and I am book to choose between.

In math, we have continued our discussion about sorting objects. We used our math problem solving journals and some giant buttons to practice sorting. Some of us sorted by color, others by shape, and some by other attributes (has corners, doesn't have corners, etc.). We also discussed different ways we could sort people, such as by height, boy/girl, type of shoes, color of shirts, etc.

We are continuing to practice writing in our writing journals. This week we discussed using a small moment to write/draw about. Many students are also working on writing "I am" sentences when drawing a picture about themselves.

The class is very excited that we began using our bingo dotters and start small group activities this week. Students used bingo dotters to work on a reading/letter skill at his/her instructional level. Some students worked on our letter "Tt", others worked on a sight word "am", and still other students dotted a sentence "I am happy." Throughout the year, students will be completing activities that are tailored to their individual needs, while making sure that all students get to use the same fun tools like bingo dotters!

Students shared their timeline projects, which look AMAZING! I will keep them hanging in the hallway for the next two weeks, so come on and stop by to check out all the cute photos and wonderfully creative designs!

Next week our class will begin its first exchange project! We are participating in a "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" letter exchange project with 25 other classes. Our class decided that we would decorate our letter in a Patriotic theme, since that would best represent what Stateside is all about. We decided to use construction paper to create an American flag design. The stripes and letters have been prepped by a wonderful volunteer, and we will begin assembling them next week! I can't wait to show off the final product and begin receiving our letters from other schools.
